Overview

Ground that moves is the most expensive problem to fix late

We have built retaining and slope structures across Negeri Sembilan and Selangor: a Terramesh mechanically stabilised earth wall at Universiti Putra Malaysia in Serdang for Highwave Resources, a new RC wall and rubble wall repair at Taman Layang-Layang in Seremban for NBS Jati, slope rehabilitation at Jalan Cengal Utama in Ampangan, and steel sheet piling along Sg. Chimpa at Sikamat.

Different problems need genuinely different structures — a gabion wall, a reinforced concrete wall, a rubble wall, an MSE wall and sheet piling are not interchangeable, and the cheapest of them is only cheap if it is the right one. We will explain which applies and why.

For anything of significant height or where a failure would threaten a building or a road, a geotechnical engineer's design is required, and we will say so rather than build to guesswork.

How we work

How a job runs

Send a photo of the slope or wall

For slope and wall problems a photograph, plus how far the problem is from a building, tells us more than anything else you could write.

Site visit and cause diagnosis

Most wall and slope failures are water, not weight. We look for where the water is going before recommending a structure.

Method, and a designer where one is needed

We recommend the wall type and say plainly when the height or the risk means an engineer's design is required.

Build, drain, backfill, compact

Weep holes and back-of-wall drainage are part of the wall, not an optional extra — that is what makes it last.

Developers, councils and house owners on sloping land

Much of the earthworks and slope repair work we do comes through main contractors on authority maintenance and rehabilitation contracts, where the failure has already happened and the fix has to be right first time.

For private owners the same logic applies, only earlier: a retaining wall built correctly when the platform is formed costs a fraction of one built after the ground has already moved.

FAQ

Earthworks & Retaining Walls — questions we get asked

A crack has appeared in my retaining wall. Is it urgent?
Possibly. A hairline shrinkage crack is normal; a crack that is wider at the top, or a wall that has started to lean or bulge, is movement and should be looked at soon. Send a photo with something for scale and we will tell you which it looks like.
Gabion or concrete wall — which is cheaper?
Gabion is usually cheaper to build and drains itself, which suits embankments and channels. A reinforced concrete wall takes less space and looks finished, which usually suits a house boundary. The right answer depends on height, space and what is behind the wall.
Do I need an engineer's design?
For low walls — roughly under a metre and a half with nothing loading them — usually not. For anything taller, anything holding up a driveway or a building, or any repair after a failure, yes. We would rather lose the job than build a tall wall without a design.
Can you clear and level my land before I build?
Yes. Clearing, grubbing, cut and fill, and compacted platform formation are routine work for us, and we can carry straight on into the foundations if you want one contractor for both.
Where does the excavated soil go?
We remove it with our own tipper lorries, or place and compact it on site if there is somewhere sensible for it — which is usually cheaper. We will price both options.
